Greetings St. Ignatius Families,

May Crowning: What a joy to celebrate our Mother in heaven with our May Crowning prayer service! The students enjoyed traveling to the Mary altar at the Loyola Jesuit Center in their Family Groups to lay down flowers for Mary. We added banners of Mary this year featuring our fourth graders' beautiful Mary artwork!

Culture Appreciation Day: As we celebrate Pentecost this weekend, we remember how the Holy Spirit united people of many nations, languages, and cultures as one family in Christ. Pentecost reminds us that God’s gifts are reflected in the beautiful diversity of His people. We wish to recognize and celebrate God’s amazing creation of each one of us as diverse, multifaceted members of our faith community. This year, students will be creating paper quilt squares to share in their Family Groups about their unique family traditions, heritage, ethnicity, customs, values, and  beliefs that shape who they are. You can help your child with ideas of what they might draw about by talking with them about:

Students may also choose to wear formal traditional attire or regalia to honor and share about their family heritage. May we continue to build a just and compassionate world for all through developing a deeper understanding and appreciation of God’s work in our lives.

Learning, Serving, & Growing in Faith: Our students continued to excel in their learning this week. The preschoolers are busy learning about the solar system and planets. The kindergarten students have been learning about the Ascension and Pentecost. Our first graders are actively observing their caterpillars form chrysalis cocoons in preparation for their transformation into butterflies. We were blessed to have a group of sophomores from St. Mary’s Academy spend time with some of our classes on Wednesday as part of a service partnership we have with some of our Catholic high schools. The second graders are learning about landforms and creating their landforms map project. The third graders are just starting to learn about Portland bridges. The fourth graders took a field trip this week to Philip Foster Farm in Estacada to learn about pioneer life in early Oregon. The fifth graders are learning how economies work along with supply and demand and manufacturing products. Meanwhile, the sixth, seventh, and eighth graders are finishing their project displays for next week’s Academic Fair. The sixth graders completed science fair projects. The seventh graders are memorizing their Night of the Notable speeches. The eighth graders are preparing for their Arrupe Service Project presentations. We can hardly wait to celebrate all of the amazing ways our students have developed their eager minds this year at next week’s Academic Fair.

Academic Fair: Next Thursday is our Academic Fair from 5:30 PM-7:00 PM in the school and Dillon Hall. Our book fair will be in the library all of next week, including during the Academic Fair. Please help our students to shine by assisting us with the following expectations:

If you are interested in assisting with quieting people in the hallways for fairshare hours, please reach out to the school office. Thank you for your assistance with these crucial expectations during our Academic Fair.

Spirit Dress Fridays in May: Our last Friday theme dress day is Decades Day next week. Students may choose their favorite decade to dress in the fashion of day. All themed spirit wear needs to be school appropriate in fit, style, length of shorts, skorts, skirts, and shirts, material, and messaging. Shoes must be close-toed with a full heel back.  Thank you for assisting your child in participating in the whole school Spirit Dress days in May.

Reminders: We need your help on two other reminders for students and families:

Kids Heart Challenge: Our Kids Heart Challenge was a great success! THANK YOU for your incredible generosity and support in helping our community grow heart healthy while making a difference for others. Together, we raised $2,567 for the American Heart Association to support children and adults with special hearts! Because we reached our school goal, we will celebrate with a Class Color Shirt Day on Thursday, June 11! Students who earned Kids Heart Challenge t-shirts by raising $50 or more for the American Heart Association are also welcome to wear their challenge shirts that day if they would like. For additional heart health tips and resources, visit the Parent Corner. If you haven’t completed Finn’s Mission yet, you can still log in at **http://www2.heart.org/goto/StIgnatius** or download the AHA Schools app  to learn Hands-Only CPR, the warning signs of a stroke and more!  Thank you again for your generous support and for helping make a difference in the lives of others!

Staff Fun Facts: This week’s St. Ignatius Staff Fun Fact belongs to Mrs. Chambers. She has never had a cup of coffee! Stay tuned next Friday for the last staff fun fact!

Summer Volunteer Opportunity: Our campus is growing and we need help keeping plants hydrated. Our parish is looking for volunteers to help water the campus over the summer:  Volunteer spots are available through the sign-up genius schedule below for June and through September. The duties are divided into two slots.  One for the church and one for the school.  One person can do both; It takes about 90 minutes of time to do the entire campus.  A family or two individuals could do it in 30-45 minutes. If rain is the forecast, there is no need to do the watering shift. Sigh up here:

Volunteer hours can be logged in Track It Forward for either the church or school. Breese Watson, our facilities manager, will be available Tuesday, June 2nd from 3:15-4:15 and Saturday, June 6th from 10:00-11:30 to review the areas to be watered and how to access the shed. If you have any questions, please contact Breese at [email protected].

Volunteer Hours: Please enter your volunteer hours for school and parish in Track It Forward. Log your hours in Track It Forward by Friday, May 29th! Invoices for remaining hours will be sent June 1st. **https://www.trackitforward.com/site/st-ignatius-school.**

May we remember the brave Americans that secured our right to live in a free, democratic country through their sacrifice on Memorial Day. Let us lean on our faith as we hear in Joshua 1:9, “I command you: be strong and steadfast! Do not fear nor be dismayed, for the LORD, your God, is with you wherever you go.”

As we celebrate Pentecost this weekend, may we rejoice in the joy and grace we receive from the Holy Spirit as we go forth to spread the Good News.  “Send forth your spirit, they are created and you renew the face of the earth.” Psalm 104:30.

Peace be with you.
