What a wonderful week we have had as we celebrated our amazing 8th graders!
Mass of the Holy Spirit: In the Jesuit tradition, we celebrated a Mass of the Holy Spirit led by our thoughtful, confident 8th grade leaders. Fr. Shane and Fr. San concelebrated, both giving part of the homily on our school year theme, Choose love. Choose to serve. At the end of this Mass, our 8th graders are given a small dove pin to symbolize their leadership in our school. The 8th graders wear their dove pins during Family Groups and other leadership roles to remind them of the graces and gifts of the Holy Spirit. We can hardly wait to see all of the wonderful ways these 8th graders will impact our community!
Learning, Growing, and Serving: Nurse Megan and Nurse Tia from the University of Portland taught our students the importance of proper handwashing using a special glow in the dark lotion and black light. Students were able to see their hands before and after washing using this special lotion. So many of our students already knew how to wash their hands well, and this was a fun activity for them to show our UP Nurses how well they can wash their hands.
Our fourth graders created informational brochures on what to do in the event of a natural disaster such as floods or wildfires in connection with their reading story of the week. Our 4th-8th grade students refereed and played matches on our makeshift pickleball courts in PE. Choosing to serve right in our own school community, our fifth graders took time to read with the kindergarteners this week. Our seventh graders made the Transition lunches. Our 8th graders spent time this week in a Wind Up Toy Speed lab exploring how stored energy can be transferred into motion through a wind-up mechanism. Students practiced measuring speed, analyzing variables that affect motion, and applying data to support their conclusions building their critical thinking skills in interpreting results. Learning abounds as we build community among students across grade levels.

St. Ignatius School Foundation: **It’s not too late to sign up to attend our St. Ignatius School Foundation’s Cornhole Tournament next Saturday, September 26th. Gather your friends and form a team, no skill required, just the desire to have FUN with other adults from our community! Spectators can register to attend too. You could win a wonderful raffle basket. The winning team will have bragging rights with their name added to the cornhole trophy below!
