We, the community of St. Ignatius School, in the tradition of Mother Marie Rose and St. Ignatius of Loyola, provide a faith-centered Catholic education guiding God’s children toward building a just and compassionate world.
Archdiocese of Portland in Oregon

Family Groups: Our 8th grade leaders led our first Family Groups! The students enjoyed getting to know one another during this community building time together talking about our school year theme and what it means to be a “Companion on the Journey”. In preparation for Family Groups, our 7th graders spent time getting to know our preschoolers this week.

Jog-a-Thon: Thank you for encouraging your friends and family to sponsor your child in our Groove Our Way to $50K! No donation is too large! The following are some highlights of our Groove Our Way to $50K Jog-a-thon.
Incentive Prizes:
Thank you for making this first fundraising event fun and successful.
High School Visits: Several of our local Catholic high schools brought student teams to talk with our 7th & 8th grade students about their high schools. The local Catholic high schools hold Open House events in October and the admission process begins in November. Of course, we hope all of our families will consider partnering with our amazing Catholic high schools for their students’ education beyond 8th grade.

Arrival and Dismissal: We’ve been enjoying beautiful weather this month! It’s a joy to see children playing and families connecting after school. Please be mindful of driving slowly through our neighboring streets as we have several students walking and biking to and from school. As a reminder, we ask that students refrain from using the play structure or engaging in chase games before school. During arrival, many students of all ages are entering the building in a short window, and a calm, safe environment helps everyone transition smoothly. Thank you for helping monitor your children before and after school.
Picture Day: This Tuesday, September 23rd, is Picture Day! Students may “dress up” or wear their school uniform for Picture Day. “Dress up” guidelines for students in kindergarten through eighth grade include:
Thank you for helping your students to follow the dress up guidelines, so we can focus on teaching. We look forward to seeing our students in their best dressed clothing for school pictures on Tuesday!
Serving, Learning & Growing: Our third graders designed their own compass rose as they study the geography of our amazing Earth. In fourth grade, the students are learning about various natural disasters developing their critical thinking skills through a Venn diagram. Our fifth graders are learning about the ‘power of yet’ and working through challenges. Our 7th graders took their turn at packing our Transition Lunches this week. The artistically talented drawings on the bags definitely bring joy to the disadvantaged in our local community! Our 8th graders spent time this week in a Wind Up Toy Speed lab exploring how stored energy can be transferred into motion through a wind-up mechanism. Students practiced measuring speed, analyzing variables that affect motion, and applying data to support their conclusions building their critical thinking skills in interpreting results.
Our University of Portland nurses visited several classrooms this week to teach a fun and educational handwashing lesson. Using a blacklight and special lotion that simulates germs, they showed students how well they washed their hands by having the students place their hands under the blacklight to reveal any missed spots—turning a simple lesson into a memorable, hands-on learning experience about the importance of proper handwashing.
Job Opportunity: We are looking for another amazing educator to join our staff as a part-time instructional assistant for preschool and 4th grade. The position runs from 8:00 AM- 1:00 PM Monday through Friday during the school year. If you know of someone that might be interested and a great addition to our community, please ask them to submit a cover letter and resume to our email at **[email protected].**
Church News: Sunday is the deadline to register your child for this year’s 1st Reconciliation & 1st Communion Classes. Register on the church website: www.sipdx.org.
Now is a great time to get involved with Children’s Liturgy of the Word (CLoW) during our 10:30 AM Mass on Sundays! More volunteers are needed to help guide students through the Gospel readings for about 20 minutes during the Mass in the Xavier room in Dillon Hall.
Altar server training for Catholic students in grades 5-8 will take place on the following dates and times: Sunday,. 9/28 at 11:30 AM, or Wednesdays on 10/8 or 10/15 from 2:15-3:15 PM. All returning and new altar servers and their parents should plan to attend one of the training sessions to note any changes in procedures for this year.
If you’d like to hear more about volunteering for CLoW or altar server training, contact the parish office!
“May the LORD reward what you have done! May you receive a full reward from the LORD, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come for refuge.” Ruth 2:12
